Turkey prolongs its military presence in Iraq and Syria
The motion, which passed with broad parliamentary support on Tuesday, authorizes the continued presence of Turkish troops across both neighboring countries beyond the current mandate, which was due to expire on October 30.
Officials said the extension is essential to sustain operations against Islamic State militants and members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), both of which Türkiye considers significant security threats.
Ankara has long maintained military positions in northern Syria and Iraq, citing its ongoing campaign against the PKK, Islamic State, and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).
Türkiye regards the YPG as the Syrian branch of the PKK, which it designates as a terrorist organization.
