At least five Daesh members get killed in US strikes— Syria monitor
The December 13 assault in Palmyra, a city renowned for its UNESCO-listed ancient ruins and previously under extremist control, involved a lone gunman from the Daesh organization and led to the deaths of two US soldiers and a US civilian, as stated by reports.
In retaliation, the United States launched attacks on more than 70 locations across central Syria, employing fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery, according to a statement from US Central Command (CENTCOM).
Rami Abdel Rahman, head of a Syrian monitoring group, told reporters that "at least five members of Daesh were killed" in eastern Syria’s Deir Ezzor province, including the leader of a cell responsible for operating drones in the area.
A Syrian security source reported that the strikes focused on IS cells located within Syria’s expansive Badia desert, including areas in Homs, Deir Ezzor, and Raqa provinces, and did not involve any ground operations. Most targets were situated in a mountainous region stretching north from Palmyra toward Deir Ezzor, the source added on condition of anonymity.
CENTCOM, using a different acronym for Daesh, noted that the operation deployed over 100 precision munitions aimed at known ISIS infrastructure and weapons sites.
US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social account, "inflicting very serious retaliation, just as I promised, on the murderous terrorists responsible," adding that those who attack Americans "WILL BE HIT HARDER THAN YOU HAVE EVER BEEN HIT BEFORE."
